Yes its a bit dated and the graphics show that, but the gameplay and startagy are as good as ever.. PC Gamer US presented Lords of the Realm with its 1994 "Best Historical Simulation"! This is a simulation of England/Wales without king, so all the different nobles are trying their best to grab the island for their own.Well there wasn’t really that many western turn-based strategy game back than but I certain enjoyed it many years ago. Even when I am short of funds to buy games for Christmas 2017 I picked the complete collection of lords of the realm after having It on Wishlist for about half a year. After 5 failed attempt I found I still got it by completing this on highest difficulty once again. The famous “One More Turn” syndrome still push me to play this all the way to 4 o’clock in the morning on working day.The game it still was running very smoothly for me and after the first half an hour you start to get use to the old low-resolution graphics. The music is ever continuous and lacking variety, but you cannot ask too much for a game from 24 years ago. The gameplay itself lacking many of the new mechanics like troop experience points but the smart economic/happiness/health system are very interesting to toy with. You just about have to move those sliders for every county every turn until you take over enough lands and get too lazy to pass it to a steward. As a very old game it doesn't have trading card and achivements. Dosbox also doesn't support steam overlay's screenshoot feature. New young player beware as this game do not have a tutorial so if you are playing it for the first time make sure you at least reading the “readme.txt” guide that’s located in the game folder. I must confess even as a return player I wasn’t very confident that I remember how exactly to do this game right, so I had to go on YouTube to watch waytofail’s playthrough of this game. Thanks bro for all the tips and reminder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Md9B0f-8FgE 8/10 and this is what is what I give for this game now. Back in 1994 it may be the best but now it’s aged quite a bit yet it’s still enjoyable and recommend for all strategy game fan to try out. It's dirt cheap for a great classic!. This game is a throwback to an older era. Seriously, it uses DOS. While it is an RTS with turn-based movement, it... is tricky for the modern sensibility. Now, the backstory of the game does make a few changes to history. In 1268, the English king was Henry III, but he was... having issues with the barons of the realm. In fact, the year prior had seen the end of the Second Barons' War. So unrest does bubble beneath the surface. Frankly, his staying on the throne was more due to the efforts of his son than his own prowess. Now, the throne DOES end up empty for over a year in 1272-1274... but this was due to his son taking his time returning from Crusade. And I do believe there were still some rebellious forces when he returned (not least in Wales). But considering said new king was Edward I Longshanks... the rebels were doomed. You might remember Edward I as being the English king in Braveheart. He was a military genius and brooked no disrespect (but gave a lot out, starting with the naming of his heir as "Prince of Wales").Okay, that aside, you do play in a time when a baron could conceivably take the throne, and maybe hold it. The gameplay is a bit confusing for me, as I am... unsure how to raise armies, fight, or... not have a peasants' revolt come out of nowhere...Still, for those used to this, or nostalgic for this game, it is a worthy acquisition.. Got this as part of the weekend sale bundle. Very cheap. Was interesting to see how the game evolved from version to version. The graphics got fancier and the simulation simpler. I kind of like complex games, so I enjoyed the first one the most. Had fun poking around to see how it worked. Didn't play for that long; but I don't expect much from an old game I paid a dollar for. A fine expense/entertainment ratio. If, like me, you hadn't noticed this series before and like the genre, its worth a buck.. If you can't approach this game with nostalgia glasses, stay away. I was really trying to like this game but failed. However the game mechanics (kingdom management) is quite nice, wish I could've played this game when it first came out. At that time I would've loved it! http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1132461557 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1389751321. Nice and funny.. I think I first played this game on CD though I wouldn't be surprised if it was on 3.5 inch floppy. I loved it thenm and I love it now. it's a simple game, with some micro managing for those of us who love a good micro manage, and you can either play the avid conqueror or the 'imma hold up in this castle and ignore the world' hermit easily. Plus you may learn a thing or two about UK geography. Like the vague location of Lancashire. Though I'm still not sure about it's relation to the M25.. So a classic game that those of us that played it when it was new will need no introduction to, but will probably be of limited interest to those new to it given how old and crotchety it is. It runs seemingly fine (in DOSBox), at least I didn't encounter any issues in the couple of hours I played so far, so if you want to relive (or continue) old adventures in conquering medieval England and Wales, go ahead. For those new to the title a brief overview - you start off with one county under your control and a couple of hundred peasants, a few sacks of grain and some cows, and from that you need to build an economy to arm and support the armies you will need to go out conquering. It is recommended to turn the economy down to easy because normal is fairly authentic in that a couple of bad seasons for weather (or plague breaking out) can seriously set you back, so you probably need the leeway while learning the mechanics.Season by season you will need to assign your peasants to different jobs - tending flocks of sheep, looking after and milking cows, sowing and harvesting grain, tending fields, mining iron ore, cutting down lumber, building castles, smithing weapons and armour, and cutting stone. The agricultural jobs shift from season to season, so for example you need more farmers when sowing or harvesting the grain than the rest of the year. The other jobs also have a foible - peasants assigned build up experience and become more effective the longer they do the same job, so you often have to weigh up carefully whether it is worth losing experience miners to sow/harvest more crops this year, etc. You also have to decide on the agricultural front how much to develop each of the 3 crops/livestocks using the limited amount of fields - grain is the most productive for food, but is more weather dependant (risky) and causes a big flux in the number of workers you have spare depending on the season. Cattle gives a constant food source (via dairy), as well as the ability to eat them in an emergency, or once your fields are crowded. Sheep can similarly be eaten in the same situations, but instead of the food from dairy you instead get wool to sell to traders when they come by.Once you have your economy up and running you can start making or buying armour and weapons to create an army to conquer your neighbours - initially they will be neutral counties with usually all peasant armies, but there are also the five competing lords who tend to have more formidable armies. If your armies meet, or you try to conquer a county (attacking the county town or a castle as appropriate) you go into a pausable real time battle segment where you can manuevre and engage the enemy troops (or autocalc if you prefer). Essentially you can see this game as a very, very early Total War type game - turned based meta game on the world map to build up your economy and forces, leading to tactical battles in real time. Now the interest here is opposite to TW - the main map is fairly interesting (if you are into this sort of thing), with lots of tough decisions to weigh up of when and what to build/work on, whereas the battles are fairly finicky and hard to usefully control your troops to do anything than a massive scrum and whoever has the most/best equipped units tends to win (although there are some rock/paper/scissors benefits to certain troop types over each other).Still this is an old game - so don't expect much help or hand holding while you learn the game - it is from the era where you were expected to read through the manual first, rather than easing you into a game learning concepts one by one via tutorials or easy intros. The hardest part of most LotR games is the first few years while you build up your initial counties economy, and one early mistake can set you back years, especially on normal economic difficulty. Even if this isn't you thing, if it is close consider LotR 2 - which simplifies the economy slightly (no experience for non-agricultural workers, no sheep), which has its pros and cons, but also makes the interface and management of your burgeoning kingdom much easier, and far improves the combat system.
